    GIF Compression

With digital files, compression is the act of removing bits of information from the file in order to reduce its overall size.

With certain file types, you can remove information from the file that has no effect on the overall quality of that file. This is known as lossless compression because the file’s perceptible quality is not lost. Meanwhile, if you compress a file by removing important bits, reducing the quality of the file, that’s known as lossy compression.

Why would you want to compress a GIF?

GIFs are more popular than ever all over the internet. While still image files are usually JPGs or PNGs, GIFs support both stills and animations. Animation support makes them ideal for sharing brief soundless film clips online.

However, GIFs usually work best when they are small files. This makes them easier to share and store. You might have a GIF that is too big for uploading or could benefit from a size reduction for easy storage. In either case, compressing that GIF would be a smart move.

How can you compress a GIF?

Our tool on this page can compress a GIF for you for free. You don’t need to give us your email and you don’t need to download any software. You can also use the tool as much as you like as there are no limits to the overall number of uploads.

To get started, you’ll first need to upload one or up to 20 GIFs. Don’t worry: if you have more than 20 GIFs you’ll be able to do multiple batches, but you are limited to doing up to 20 at one time.

To upload your GIF(s), hit the “UPLOAD FILES” button. Once uploaded, our server will instantly begin analyzing the file(s) and figuring out the best compression ratio — the sweet spot between file size and image quality. If you’re happy with the server’s suggestion, you can hit “DOWNLOAD” (for one file at a time) or “DOWNLOAD ALL” (for one ZIP with all files).

However, if you want to finely tune the compression ratio for each image, that is possible to do. Simply tap an image thumbnail in the queue to launch the manual mode. Change the compression quality using the slider until you land on a satisfactory level. Hit the “APPLY” button and move on to the next image and repeat these steps. Then proceed to the download stage.

If you still have more GIFs you need to compress, hit the “CLEAR QUEUE” button and start over. Remember that you can only upload 20 files per session but you can perform unlimited sessions.

Is it safe to compress GIF files?

There is no need to worry about using our tool to compress GIFs. Our server is secure. It is completely automated and also performs an automatic purge of all uploaded information every 60 minutes. In other words, one hour after you upload a GIF to our server, it deletes that upload and any compressed versions of that upload.

However, don’t worry about your original file. That is still safe on your computer or phone as our server cannot delete your device’s files.
